You don’t have to be a chemist to brew the perfect cup of coffee at home, but you do need to know a few basic dos and don’ts. Follow these very simple steps, and you can have that simply amazing cup of coffee!
- Make sure your coffee making equipment is spotlessly clean. If you don’t diligently wash things after each use, coffee sediment and oils will build up and you’ll be left with a nasty taste to your coffee. Do your dishes! - Start with the very best beans. Whole beans that you will grind yourself are the very best. But only buy what you will use within a week or two. Remember that moisture and light are the enemies of beans, so don’t store your extras in the refrigerator or freezer. Store your beans in a cool, dry cupboard out of direct light. - Know what kind of grind is best for your maker. French presses and percolators need a coarsely ground bean. Drip makers require a fine ground. If you don’t have the proper grind, your coffee will be bitter and distasteful. - Use good, clean water. Filtered water is best. As far as temperature, use very hot water, but not boiling. - And, finally, stir your coffee just after it’s made just before drinking. This disperses the coffee particulates and helps provide a consistent cup of coffee.
