Kathy White is a good hostess; she’ll offer you a cup of coffee and a homemade baked good. This time it’s a chocolate chip cookie bar. You take a bite. “Is that cake batter I taste?” She gives you a sly smile and answers, “Not exactly.” She is not usually stingy with her recipes - unless they are waiting to be tasted, judged, and hopefully awarded a ribbon at this year’s Spokane County Fair. |

When it comes to golf, there’s hardly a better way to spend an afternoon. The Declaration of Independence for many seniors is less of historical document than a daily mind-stretching, body-bending, cardio-boosting personal journey through their golden years.

As children, we often fancifully declared what we would be when we grew up: astronauts, detectives, Olympic gold winners, even kings and queens. As time passed, our declarations were often forgotten about and directed to more practical careers, but not always; members of the Big Mumbo Blues Band have not forgotten their youthful desires, a love that began about 40 years ago when they each picked up an instrument in junior high school.

|
|
|
When it comes to care of home landscaping, people tend to think primarily of spring and summer. As soon as the weather warms and grass starts growing, they break out the weed and seed spreader and the mower and get to work. It's nice to know that there is life outside my cubicle and that people are not only reading Prime magazine, but are using the information in the stories to their advantage. In our last issue we covered the Plus 50 program that's giving seniors the necessary skills to rejoin the world of work. It wasn't long after the issue hit the newsstands that we heard from Program Associate Sharon Niblock that the story was already doing good.

Written by John Blailey

You’ve decided it. Your old computer needs to go. The dust lurking in the cracks and crannies, the dried coffee splatters, and that mythical ‘beige-to-tan’ color transformation that takes place over the years embody this once “top of the line” computer of yours. It runs slower than molasses on a winter day and it’s starting to get jealous of your newer, younger, prettier computer.

I don’t buy a lot of clothes, really. My husband would argue, in that I have ten times the amount he does. I love finding things for other people, but honestly, when it comes to myself, I’m not a very good shopper for several reasons. I don’t like schlepping things in and out of dressing rooms or changing my clothes eight times or (ever) looking at myself from a foot away ina bright light. I don’t like being helped or even asked if I want to be. Nothing against retail employees; it’s just a thing with me that makes me turn and slink away.

For him, it’s personal. “My father was injured in an accident that left him in a wheelchair,” he says. At the time, his parents lived in a split-level home in Coeur d’Alene. “I ended up modifying the lower level, and that’s the only portion of the home he could use.” |

Night temperatures are dropping, and the crisp morning air whispers of frost. October begins the dormant season for trees and plants in our region. The time has come to prepare the garden for sleep. Or has it? What about the well-intentioned homeowner scrambling to finish an 11th-hour yard project? Or the savvy shopper hoping to benefit from end-of-season nursery sales? Or the gardener who still has a sack of daffodil bulbs sitting on the porch? |

Miniatures become big hobby for Spokane woman. Nancy MacKerrow enjoys creating tiny scenes within tiny walls. Miniature rooms of sundry themes dot her apartment. There are advantages to such a hobby. “One thing that’s neat about miniature rooms is, if you can’t afford this wonderful room you want, you can make it in miniature and still have it,” MacKerrow says. “And when you go on a trip, you can buy furniture, and it fits in your suitcase.” |
